Mercury Abatement and Burden Sharing - Tuesday 20th September 2005
A one day Seminar has been arranged by CAMEO as part of the FBCA annual conference. It will address a variety of aspects relating to Abatement, Burden Sharing and Environmental issues likely to affect the cremation movement in the build up to 2012.

A day full of key information for Crematoria owners, Managers and Regulators.

Mercury Abatement in Germany
The Germans have been abating mercury for some years; Mr. Dieter Zahn will provide details of their experience providing UK operators with a valuable insight of the process to come.

10.30am Coffee

Heat Exchange
The introduction of abatement plant will provide cremation authorities with the opportunity to utilise waste heat, providing further environmental benefits. Mr. Andrew Mallalieu, Facutatieve Technologies Limited, will provide delegates with a detailed explanation of this important potential resource.

Mercury Recovery
The purpose of abatement is to prevent mercury from entering the environment. Dr. John Reed, of Quicksilver Recovery Service Limited, will explain the benefits of being able to recycle mercury recovered from cremation. Potentially turning a pollutant into a recyclable resource.

2.00pm Leasing Cremation Equipment
The installation of abatement plant will entail significant costs for Cremation Authorities. James Cranmer, of Cranmer Lawrence and Company, will explain the benefits of leasing the equipment.

Mercury Abatement without Producing Chemical Waste
The disposal of waste from filtration in itself poses environmental issues and costs. Mr Ton Vermeulen, of Vermeulen Product Engineering, Netherlands, will be explaining a system of filtration that overcomes these issues.

Specifying Abatement Equipment
In order to obtain the abatement equipment you require it is necessary to prepare a robust specification. Dr. Clive Chamberlain, Consultant emissions engineer to the FBCA, is currently preparing an industry specification on behalf of the Federation for the purchase of abatement plant. Clive will be explaining the principles of the specification.

CAMEO
CAMEO is the means of informing DEFRA of the progress the industry is making towards compliance and a recognised vehicle for burden sharing. Brendan Day, CAMEO Manager, will be providing an update, followed by a question and answer session.
