The Federation has been involved in the provision of training for Crematorium Technicians for many years and its course is recognised in the Process Guidance notes. The introduction of this online resource came about when SANDS and Federation members identified a need for additional training relating to the cremation of babies.

Working with Birmingham and Bristol Universities, the module has been designed to provide Crematorium Technicians with an insight into the importance of ashes for grieving parents and provides them with technical advice and skills to ensure they can recover the maximum amount of ashes from the cremation of non-viable, stillborn, and very young deceased babies.

Based on the insights from parents the module is constructed to provide the following learning outcomes:

  • The definitions of non-viable babies, stillborn babies, and very young deceased babies,
  • The various reasons why the ashes of these babies are important to people, and why it is vital to maximise the recovery of the ashes
  • The range of ways in which people perceive the ashes, and the implications this has for the process of recovering the ashes
  • The difficulties involved in recovering ashes from these cremations
  • How to carry out the cremation process to maximise the recovery of the ashes.

The module explains why it is so important for technicians to ensure that ashes are always preserved and made available to the parents because it is often a vital part of enabling parents to move to the next stage of their grieving.

Upon completion of the module, which is free to Federation Members, a Certificate of Completion is generated automatically.
