The Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) has contributed to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry’s Module 10 investigation and the summary report from that roundtable engagement is now published.
Module 10 examines the impact of the pandemic on society, including the experiences of key workers. As the representative body for cremation and burial authorities across the UK, The FBCA took part in a dedicated roundtable to ensure the bereavement sector’s experience is formally recognised within the Inquiry’s work.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, crematoria and burial authorities remained operational as essential public services. Colleagues across the sector worked under sustained and unprecedented pressure, managing increased demand while adapting to evolving public health guidance and restrictions. At all times, the priority remained clear: to provide safe, dignified and compassionate services to bereaved families.
The FBCA’s contribution to the Inquiry reflects the operational challenges faced by authorities, the resilience and professionalism of staff and the importance of clear communication and coordinated planning during national emergencies. It also highlights lessons that must inform future preparedness to ensure that essential death care services are supported and protected in any future public health crisis.
The publication of this report ensures that the experiences of cremation and burial authorities form part of the national record and contribute to shaping future policy and resilience planning.
