Funeral Frontline Healthcare: Vaccine Update

10th February 2021 | COVID-19 Guidance Updates

Members will be aware that the Federation, along with the ICCM and other members of the DMAG, has been lobbying government to include members of the cemetery and crematorium sectors in the priority group for the vaccination, those defined as ‘funeral Operatives’.

The Cabinet Office have today confirmed that ‘Ministers have agreed the attached operational definition, which I would be grateful if you could share with your members and across the sector’. Regrettably it does not specifically include cemetery and crematorium staff.

However, it does state that ‘There is a heightened risk of exposure to COVID-19 when hosting funeral ceremonies due to the legal exemption to break self-isolation to attend a funeral of a close family member.’ As this clearly applies to those involved in the operation of cemetery and crematorium chapels, members may wish to use the revised definition if you are approaching the LRF’s, Clinical Commissioning Group or NHS seeking to obtain the vaccination.
