Oxford Crematorium Unveils New Look Interior with Improved Facilities for Mourners

Oxford Crematorium is set to unveil a new look chapel this week following an extensive £50k refurbishment of the building.

The project aimed to modernise the chapel and includes new furniture, curtains, carpets and flooring following an investment of £50,000 by owners The Crematorium and Memorial Group (CMG). The chapel has been redecorated and CMG have also worked closely with restoration specialists to reupholster the chairs.

Investment in technology to improve services includes the installation of an additional visual tribute screens in the main chapel that can show family photographs or home movies during the funeral.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the ability to record or web-cast funerals for mourners that have been unable to attend a funeral because they are self-isolating, unable to travel or experiencing ill-health, has been of vital importance. Oxford Crematorium already has this technology in the main chapel, but additional equipment has now been installed in the smaller chapel.

Speaking about the refurbishment, Trish Smith, Manager at Oxford Crematorium, said: “We provide an important service to the local community and this project has significantly improved our facilities. The refurbished chapel means that local families will have the modern facilities and comforts they want when they say a last farewell to their loved ones.”

The waiting room, where mourners can shelter from the elements in comfort whilst waiting for a service to start, and the Book of Remembrance room will also be updated later this year.
